Why does stress/sadness/anxiety cause a person to throw up?

During my life, at times when I have been terribly stressed for long periods of time, or shocked at learning something awful about my (now ex) husband, I throw up. Even brushing my teeth makes me want to throw up, and it’s very hard to keep food down. As the stress/sadness/worry ease, it becomes easier.
So my question is, why does this happen from a medical/physiological sense?
