Which medication is more effective in treating anxiety and panic attacks – Zoloft or Prozac?

Out of these two medications, which one is most effective in treating anxiety, and/or which one is known to have a quicker effect with a lesser amount of side effects? Thanks!

What medicine is good and works for one person does not make it right for someone else. If I was you, I would do research (which is what I suggest anyone do before they take any med -herbal or prescription). I noticed today that yahoo offers a lot of help in their health section. Another good web page for any kind of medical condition is http://www.webmd.com. They also offer information on herbal supplements which also have side effects. If you are diagnosed with an illness and/or take any kind of medication, remember that knowledge is power. The more you know about what ails you the better off you will be having gained knowledge about what you are dealing with. You can also google it and find all kinds of info. I’m afraid there is no magical right answer for you. I can tell you that sometimes it takes the doctor messing around with your scripts to find the right one for you. A lot of side affects go away. Some of them linger and stay. You will have to figure out which side effects you can deal with and the ones you can’t. I myself have had numerous changes in my meds over a 12 year period of time. I believe now I am on the right handful of medications. I hope I have helped in some way. Good luck and if you need help doing some research let me know i’d be glad to help. I think both of these medications are anti-depressants and not anti-anxiety meds.
Katie – I suggest you check with a psychiatrist (they prescribe all types of medications for mental disorders). They are very skilled and knowledgable. Unfortunately, no one knows knows how they will react to a medication until they’ve taken it. My friends/family have changed from those to Lexapro which has virtually no side effects and is extremely effective. Talk to your doctor and see if you can be referred to a psychiatrist. If you’re already working with a psychiatrist, maybe ask them what they see as the most common side effect for someone of your age, sex, etc. and take their suggestion. Either way, it will take several weeks for the medication to get into your system and start working, so don’t get frustrated or lose hope. Sometimes, it just takes a while.
Zoloft probably. I think Paroxetine is the best for anxiety, but I am taking Citalopram with good effects.
You cant ask that ? cause eveybody’s body is different just cause one worked for me doesnt mean it will be good for you just go buy what your doctor tells you and see…good luck
Negative emotions (like sadness, stress, anger, etc.) causes your Serotonin production to be low; when your Serotonin level is low, you are more prone to getting Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Depression, etc.
Medication like Antidepressants (SSRI – Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) helps to boost Serotonin level.
But there are natural ways to do it without medication. There’s this strange herb called "St John’s Wort" – it is said to be more effective than Prozac. No, it is not for mild depression only and ignore those sayings. In fact, it does help anxiety and panic-attacks as St John’s Wort works like prozac. Other natural ways will be exercise, diet, more exposure to light, etc.
The problem is that, even if your Serotonin is balanced… you have that "learned behavior" in your mind. You need to break that initial cycle to destroy that learned behavior – Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) does this. A technique that you can use without CBT will be Distraction… There are several other techniques to help cope them!
