No, don’t use it. They sell a product at Lowe’s or Home Depot that is called an old work ceiling fan box. It comes with a two-piece bar with threads that expand the bar out and supports it firmly between the joists. This is the best rated support box for a ceiling fan, and the best part is you don’t have to go up into the attic to install it. Just go to the store and ask for it in either the electrical or lighting section. They’ll lead you right to it. Good luck and God Bless!!

By the way, in case you need to know, the box I’m talking about is rated for a 75 lb. fan or a 150 lb. light fixture on 16" joist centers.
