Took down the light & plastic box to put in a ceiling fan. Will the thin metal bar there hold the 42" fan?

Took down the light fixture & plastic box in our bathroom to put in a ceiling fan. I was hoping for a 2×4 to be there to attach the new metal box but there is a then metal strip that the plastic bax was bolted to. It’s thicker than the strips used between joist and is crimped for strength. Should the thin metal bar be able to hold the 42" fan? Thanks!

No, don’t use it. They sell a product at Lowe’s or Home Depot that is called an old work ceiling fan box. It comes with a two-piece bar with threads that expand the bar out and supports it firmly between the joists. This is the best rated support box for a ceiling fan, and the best part is you don’t have to go up into the attic to install it. Just go to the store and ask for it in either the electrical or lighting section. They’ll lead you right to it. Good luck and God Bless!!

By the way, in case you need to know, the box I’m talking about is rated for a 75 lb. fan or a 150 lb. light fixture on 16" joist centers.
