what is the best medication for severe anxiety?

i am going to see my doctor tomorrow to be put on medication for anxiety and was wondering what some of the best medications are? any advice or tips would be appreciated.

Are there many options out there? Or is there hardly any variety? I am going to the doctor soon to be put on anti-depressants, and want to know what to expect.

Also, could you name one with the best effectivness? I know not all medications are the same for everyone, but I still want a little bit of an idea.

Thanks in advance.

What medications or activities do you suggest one should do if suffering from anxiety or depression? In the past, I’ve taken Cymbalta, Celexa, and Paxil none work and have only made me sleepy.

This is a VERY hard question. Experts only, please.

I have a wife who suffers from depression. She has been on anti-depressants and they worked, but left her feeling neutral while on them, rather than happy and sad.

She is now off the medications (and has been for a couple years). Lately, she has been having depression strike in place of emotions like happiness or love. Instead of feeling the good stuff, she feels that feeling we get when we break up with someone.

My theory is that we could find a substance for her to take when she improperly dips into that pain (the breakup pain), and that alleviates it just like an aspirin alleviates a headache, then it might free her mind to feel happiness again.

Does anyone know of a substance that works fairly quickly that she doesn’t have to stay on, but can take more like an aspirin? Something that alleviates the symptoms, but isn’t an "anti-depressant" like Celexa or something?

Natural substances, illegal substances, medications
A little addition, in response to some of the first answers (and thank you VERY much for these first answers!):

Yes, ideally we would like something that isn’t addictive. That’s a bad problem. Also, won’t being on anti-depressants her whole life kill her? What about the liver damage?

Thanks.

Panic disorder?

My wife’s 34. 2 weeks ago, in the middle of the night, she told me that her brain was flying, felt tingling sensation in her hands and legs, had difficulty in breathing, was palpitating and so on. The whole night I held her and the next morning i rushed to a hospital. After the usual check ups, the doctor diagnosed it as an Anemia and gave some medicines. Then after a week, again at the same time, she felt the same kind of symptoms. Again I rushed her to hospital and the GP referred her to Neuropsychiatrist who diagnosed it as Panic Disorder. Although she’s under medications, she has been suffering from those symptoms more frequently. I’m in dilemma.
I just want to know whether there are any websites where I can scan her med. reports and ask the doctors online. I’m really lost. Please help me.

I am just wondering how to get over these nervous spells that I have been getting for a week now all of a sudden. Is there any way to overcome large amounts of nervousness to where you can do something natural (besides hopping on medications which is what I don’t want) to never have to worry about nervousness and to over come nervous break downs? Thanks for your answers.

Panic Disorder?

My wife’s 34. 3 weeks ago, in the middle of the night, she told me that her brain was flying, felt tingling sensation in her hands and legs, had difficulty in breathing, was palpitating and so on. I had her CT Scan and EEG done. Although she’s under medications, she has been suffering from those symptoms more frequently. The medicines she’s taking are PAROXETINE CR 25mg, ALPRAZOLAM SR 5mg and PROPRANOLOL HYDROCHLORIDE 10 mg. Medications also hasn’t improved her health. I just want to know whether there are any websites where I can scan her med. reports and ask the doctors online. I’m really lost. Please help me.

My best friend has an extreme case of OCD but refuses to see a psychologist and refuses to take medications.. Which is fine with me, but his OCD seems to get more extreme by the day. He thinks that these pointless things he does and pointless things he thinks about are necessary in life and he thinks something bad will happen if he doesnt do them. His conscience is taking over his actions and making him do repetitive, weird and obsessive things. What can I do to help him?

i know psychiatry probably deals with mental illness and the use of medications for those illness.

seratonin levels in the brain?

I wonder if one can maintain seratonin levels(that are lacking in the brain) without taking medications?
if one is suffering from clinical depression

I want to know how depression or anxiety affects people sleeping pattern (especially narcolepsy), eating habits (over-eating) and money matters, like impulsive shopper or addicted to shopping. What treatments are available besides medications. I want to treat the cause and not just the symptoms, but would also like any information on dealing with the symptoms.

I have hay fever so it is not unusual for me to be congested, but the heart palpitations are a more recent phenomenon.
I didn’t take any medications.
The last two times I was just driving a car.

I was just wondering if anyone has visited a doctor for a form of panic disorder called agoraphobia, and what the Dr.’s first prescription choice was for you and how it’s helped you so far, if it’s helped at all. I have developed this and I need to get some answers on some of the medications, that way I can tell the Dr. what kind of medication I’m seeking, if that makes sense?
PLEASE NO STUPID DRUG ADDICT ANSWERS, I’M NOT LOOKING TO GET HIGH

Heart Palpitations?

I suffer from occasional heart palpitations but this morning it was really bad. I am planning on going to the doctor but maybe someone has some insight on what it could be. And how do you deal with that.
I don’t take any medications. Don’t drink or smoke. Overall a healthy person.
