Anxiety leading to a "panic attack" is a phenomenon associated with Depression. Your brain gets fixated on a particular idea and sets up a "loop" which self propagates. This is a well known and well understood occurrence. But understanding it and actually doing something that's effective in treating the underlying cause are quite different.
Yes, xanax, valium and the host of other antianxiety pills will treat the symptom but do nothing about the root cause.
Anxiety can range from simple racing thoughts like How my wife got from a vacuum cleaner problem to asking , "Did Jesus have a brother?" in 2 seconds flat (This must have set some kind of mind speed record.) to a feeling of hopelessness, despair and ungrounded extreme fear which has psychosomatic symptoms. Dangerous? absolutely.
Doctors will throw pills at it and that does provide temporary relief but who wants to walk around "doped up". Therapy with a psychotherapist, if they're good, will guide you through the process of relieving the real cause of the panic attacks.
God bless and help you through this.

No you will not have it the rest of your life if you deal with the root cause of what brought it on. In my situation it was a series of traumatic events when I was a kid. Just knowing that was not enough to cure it, but it then lead me to other non drug methods which cured me. I am not talking about a magic fix, just practical methods that worked over time. I am not one for medication as I believe it just supresses rather that cures (for panic\anxiety etc).

I have done this in the past and it does lessen\get rid of that panic state:

Breath in deeply through the nose, hold a second then breathe out slowly out the mouth, then hold a second, then repeat. Keep doing this for a few minutes. Also you need to change your physical position, get up and move around, make sure you are upright (not hunched), and you are looking upwards. After you have finished doing the breathing method, break out into a big smile (I know it maybe a false one, but just do it and see the results), and walk around looking upwards. Pretty soon you will notice that your state has changed. What is your favourite song? Watch your favourite comedy show or movie.

Other methods that have helped me, was that a friend suggested some NLP techniques and then that led me to EFT, which is really easy and very powerful at getting rid of unwanted negative emotion. Well it worked very well for me any way. If you want to try it out, then check out www.emofree.com (it's free). You can also search on Youtube for EFT and panic attacks (or anxiety), then you can see and read about it. The only way you will know if it works for you is to do it then test for yourself.

The only other method I have heard of that worked on panic attacks is at this website -

http://tinyurl.com/PanicAndAnxietyInfo.

A family member used it and it worked really well for them. It has been my experience and that of many others that you can get rid of those unwanted emotionally reactions. You need to figure out which method best works for you now.

All the very best to you.

Hey, I understand how you feel...

The uncomfortable symptoms like sweaty palms, "jelly" legs, extreme alertness, "impending doom" feeling and the fight-or-flight response.
I've been there. I'm an ex-victim. Sometimes the deep breathing or distraction techniques doesn't work - a full-blown panic or anxiety attack happens later.
Sometimes you experience panic attack out of the blue and such.

Do NOT buy Panic Away, Linden Method, EasyCalm or the Panic Puzzle. They do NOT work - I've tried them and their solutions are similar - it DOESN'T WORK.
Medications do NOT work - I was under many antidepressants (Prozac, Lexapro, Paxil and Zoloft) and anti-anxiety medications (Ativan, Klonopin, and Xanax) but my condition was the same - no improvement at all.

The only program that really work is The Panic Attack Solution. It's found by an ex-victim. You can check out his old blog in his official website to read up some useful tips.
But the package is the best - it teaches 17 powerful techniques and the real solution to panic attacks. I've bought it and it really helped me - it's the BEST anti-anxiety package or book I've read.
His theory really makes sense and it works effectively!

You will learn why your panic attacks can happen without warning sometimes; why having stimulant causes panic attacks; and many-many other useful tips!
