Is anti anxiety medication right for me and which is the best?

I am in my late twenties and for years I have dealt with anxiety and some anger. I now have a small child and find myself getting frustrated with her. I tried Wellbutrin in the past and the side effects were horrible. My family has a history of anxiety issues and I would like to know others opinions on this issue. I’m going to the doctor next week, and want to find out info before the appt. Thanks!

try Xanax or Valium but only take it when you absolutely have to and take the lowest dose possible because they both can be addictive if misused
Only you and your doctor can decide that. You will most likely try several meds before you find one that does not cause side effects. Ask for free samples so that you don’t have to buy a months worth only to find out they don’t work for you a week later.
It sounds as if you may have depression or seratonin issues as well as anxiety. That may be why your doctor gave you Welbutrin. But not all medications work for all people. If you didn’t tolerate it well, then try something else. You may need a class of drugs called seratonin reuptake inhibitors. If your family has these issues, too, it could be inherited. Talk to your psychiatrist… not just your family doctor. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who studied a few more years to learn about psychological issues. A psychiatrist can evaluate your emotional issues and prescribe the proper medication. Your family doctor probably does not have this level of skill. And congratulations for taking an active role in dealing with this. Too many people are afraid to admit they have a problem.
I also suffer from anxiety disorder. I take an SSRI eg Prozac, Zoloft etc. From my experience the best medication is the one that suits you the best.I tried a couple, before settling on Zoloft. Sometimes the side affects settle down after a few weeks. Keep regular Doctors appointments to discuss how you feel. Maybe some Counselling may help. I found Yoga and Pilates to be helpful. Let your family know how you feel and ask for help if you need it. Good Luck
I believe you also have some kind of other issue besides anxiety.. it’s just that ‘anxiety’ manifests itself more visibly TO YOU than say depression (ask your family if you appear depressed – and/or check out info online to see if you fit into the self tests). Paxil (a SSRI) has been ‘approved’ to treat panic/anxiety attacks and is also an anti-depressant. Since I have never received ‘relief’ from any of these meds, I do take Xanax and regularly, but I have not increased my dosage in 10 years… so…
The moral of the story is.. find what works best for you AND while it’s true that things like Xanax or Valium CAN BE addicting there is a difference between addiction and physical dependence. A word of warning, IF you start taking a Xanax type drug, and decide to stop, DO SO SLOWLY, and wean yourself off.. people’s bodies do not tend to care for immediate cessation of these type of drugs and it can cause siezures if not done properly. Frequently anxiety is an underlying symptom of depression.Anger also is the flip side of depression.There are many helpful anti depressants on the market.Anti anxiety medications such as Xanax do help anxiety however they can increase your depression.The quickest acting anti depressant is lexapro.Try to have a family member to watch your child one day so you can go out and do something for yourself Good Luck
The best drugs for anxiety are benzodiazapines, ativan, xanax etc. These are commonly prescribed for long term use in high doses if your anxiety problem is worse than the inevitable addiction. Your doctor would make that call.
I have anxiety disorder and am currently on Celexa (an SSRI)–I was on Lexapro but it was getting too expensive, and Celexa is nearly the same but has a generic available. It’s done wonders for me.
Besides the medication, do some things for yourself. Young mothers tend to neglect themselves in favor of their children, which does no one any favors. Take some time off if you have someone who can watch your daughter. Someone with your anger and anxiety problems really needs some time away, if that can be managed. It will make you feel better and help you be a better mother.
