How well does Valium work on anxiety at a dental visit?

I’m going to get some cavities filled in 2 weeks. Because of my SEVERE fear of the dentist and needles, they prescribed 20mg of Valium one hour before the appointment. I’ve never taken it before. How well does it work to ease anxiety? And does it really have an effect on your pain tolerance like I’ve read? Anyone have any experience with it being used in this capacity?

it will ,but you HAD BEST BELIEVE THEY ARE ADDICTING AND WILL LEAD TO MANY PROBLEMS
They do help calm your anxiety. I would’ve thought they would of had you take one before bed and then one before the actual appt. So you would know the effects it has on you…….. You will be able to tell the difference. I wouldn’t worry about the pain , they have numbing for that. Just practice breathing deep breaths , you should be good. I did it to pulll my wisdom out , also with the valium. Everything turned out fine. Best of luck!
It works very well. You’re going to get worked up thinking too much about it so the best thing to do is just focus on other things. I had a deep root cleaning done on the roots of my teeth and was given a half a Valium to help calm my nerves because of how scared I get too but it really helped me relax. It doesn’t help with the pain, just the nerves. The pain is the same but you’re not as worried about it so it doesn’t feel as bad. Although Valium is addicting you don’t have to worry about becoming addicted to it unless you have a whole bottle of it. If you are using it to help you get through a tough situation and not on a daily basis you don’t have to worry.
I am a dental phobic. My dentist has me take Valium before my visit as well. It does relieve my anxiety~ I was previously unable to withstand even hearing the sounds or smelling anything in his office. With it I am able to walk into his office and tolerate my appointments without any problems. Believe it or not, I have actually slept through some appointments from being so relaxed!
Valium is a safe and good sedation option for you. A lot of people have significant anxiety in the dental office and “sedation dentistry” has become very common. Twenty milligrams of Valium is a good amount and should offer you significant relief. The valium itself will not act to increase your “pain tolerance”, but it will take away your apprehension prior to the dentist giving you the local anesthesia, which is probably your biggest fear. After your mouth is numb you will not feel any discomfort! I’m sure your dentist told you that you will need to have someone with you to drive you home after you appointment. Hope this helps!
