How can I relieve the symptoms of a panic attack?

it would really be helpful if some one who use to have/has panic attacks or knows someone to give me feedback.
i found deep breathing to be some what helpful. i dont have the money for doctors or pills and i dont really want to need them for the rest of my life. what are somethings that help you? do you have any success stories?
and will i have panic attacks forever?

If you’re talking about a full-on panic attack (not just breathing weird and racing heart, but the whole thing with terror and need-to-flee type things) you will find permanent relief by talking to a doc and being prescribed pediatric doses of certain anti-depressants. You don’t need to be on them for life – just long enough to alter your brain chemistry. I know some of the older tricyclics work for this, as well as Prozac and likely others.
You say you don’t have money for this, but you really need to find it. It’s not like therapy – you’d just need one session and then maybe one more if there’s a problem with dosages. But if you’re talking about FULL panic attacks, deep breathing can help a little bit, but it doesn’t change the worst of the symptoms. Maybe see if your city has mental health services on a sliding scale if you have to, but don’t live like this. It’s biochemical in nature and you just need to adjust the biochemicals in your brain.

Something that has relieved my panic attacks (and the anxiety in between) greatly is mindfulness. It’s not something that will work in a day or a week, but if you practice it, it will help you cope with anxiety, panic attacks and difficult periods in life in general.
The only downside to mindfulness as I see it, is that it can be a bit timeconsuming. You should try practicing it and doing some exercises every day for best results. This kind of deterred me at the beginning, but then I figured I was wasting hours a day being scared, so I might as well use that time to do these exercises. Ang honestly, they helped!
I know it can sound a little new agey, since meditation and yoga are a part of it, but it’s really a very good method to keep you from getting caught up in your own (panicky) thoughts.
Try the book ‘Get Out of Your Mind and into Your Life’ by Stephen C. Hayes. It is a very good beginners guide to mindfulness, with easy to follow exercises that will help you master this technique. It’s a small investment to make and if you follow the guidelines, it can bring great relief!

And no, you won’t have panic attacks for the rest of your life, I got rid of them quite effectively (plus, I don’t mind the times I do feel anxious – which everyone does every now and then – anymore). So I guess I am one of your success stories, yay!
