anxiety medication?

can you get a prescription for anxiety medication from a general physician, or do you need to go to a psychiatrist? also, what are some prescriptions used for anxiety disorder and panic disorder?

you can get a script for either one. i wouldn’t suggest benzo’s like Xanax, Klonopin, Ativan. they are highly addictive drugs. your body builds a tolerance to the drug, making it to where you need more to calm your anxiety. i am on Vistaril for my anxiety. it works just as well if not better than benzo’s. it has very few side effects and it is NON-ADDICTIVE unlike the benzo’s. i have been on it for 2 years and never once have i had to up the dosage. just be careful and talk to your doctor. ask if it is an addictive drug before getting him to give you a script. i was hooked on Ativan & Xanax the withdrawals i had coming off of them was extreme suffering.

As far as i know you can. Paxil is one , but there are so many others available. It’s up to your Dr. which one he feels best for you and problem. Good Luck.
yeah i’m in the same boat as you.
i’m almost positive you can get it from a gp, but you’re better off going to a psychiatrist as they could give a better diagnoses and be more understanding.
yes you can from a general dr, but i heard its easiar to get them through a psychiatrist.. xanax works miracles but its addictive.
A regular doctor will refer you to a psychiatrist normally but they can prescribe all medications.

Any SSRI (Selective Serotonin Retake Inhibitor) will often be of help with anxiety.
It depends on what kind of health insurance you have or clinic you go to, but start with a general doctor and if you need to get a referral to a psychiatrist, do that when you talk to the general doctor. Also, the GP can do some physical tests, like test your Vitamin D and your thyroid levels – to rule out a physical reason for the anxiety. Some meds are SSRIs like Paxil, Prozac, Zoloft, etc. Those are more long term meds. Some of them work like a charm, but some of them can make anxiety worse – it seems like a case by case basis, so you might have to "med shop" and test some out a little. Other shorter acting meds (more for panic than general anxiety) are benzodiazapines (I think I spelled that right) – some of these meds are Ativan, Xanax, Valium. There are also lots of natural routes you could try that have fewer side effects – yoga, breathing techniques, and a therapy that has changed my life called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Best of luck!
