Just wondering what is a ‘chemical imbalance’ when it comes to depression

I have always wondered this. To me this seems like it would hurt the organism. If you have a tooth ache how is it an advantage to have nerves cause you so much pain that you can no longer eat. To me it would be more advantageous to develop like a shark does. So when our teeth break or rot they just fall out and another pops up in its place.

Nervous breakdown and clinical depression, is there a difference?
If so, what are the differences?
